Adding a Placeholder Field for a Variable
When you're editing a template, you use the HotDocs Field Editor to add a placeholder field to the template to reference a variable.
To add a placeholder field for a variable
- Open a template.
- Select the text you want to replace, or position the cursor where you want to add a placeholder field.
- In the HotDocs Field Editor, from the Action box, select Add a Placeholder.
- In the Placeholder type box, select the variable type you want the placeholder to reference.
- In the Field properties box, under Variable, type the name for your new variable (or select an existing variable from the drop-down list).
- For a new variable, click Create Now.
For Selection variables, select an Option source; then (optionally) set the Assembly value property to define which column of the option source contains the values you want HotDocs to replace the placeholder field with during document assembly.
- The following tasks are optional:
- (Optional) Edit the properties for your variable by clicking the Edit component button this displays the appropriate variable editor (for example, the Text Variable Editor).
- (Optional) Link your variable to a dialog.
- (Optional) Choose a Format for your variable.
- (Optional) Expand Advanced properties to edit further component properties.
If you selected existing text when adding a placeholder field, you can select the Replace Multiple check box to display the replace options.
- Click Add Field.
