Formatting an Answer

You can define the pattern HotDocs uses to format answers (or other values) in assembled documents by:

If you do not set a default format or set one for an individual placeholder, HotDocs places an answer in the final document exactly as it is entered in the interview.

To set a default format for a variable using Component Studio

Setting a default format for a variable sets the format for every placeholder field that references that variable throughout the template.

  1. Open Component Studio.
  2. In the main component list, select (or create) the variable that you want to set the default format for.
  3. Click the Behavior tab.
  4. In the Default format drop-down list, select a format (you can also create a custom format by typing one into the Format box).

The formats that display in the Format drop-down lists can be managed in the My Formats section of the HotDocs Options Dialog Box.

Setting a default format does not override any formats you have already (or will) set for an individual placeholder field using the HotDocs Field Editor.

To set a format for an individual placeholder field using the HotDocs Field Editor

Setting a format for an individual placeholder field only sets the format for that specific instance of the placeholder field (it also overrides any default format).

  1. Open a template.
  2. In the body of the template, select (or add a new) placeholder field you want to edit.
  3. In the HotDocs Field Editor, in the Field Properties box, and under Format, select a format from the drop-down list (you can also create a custom format by typing one into the Format box).
