System Requirements for HotDocs Author

Before installing HotDocs Author, make sure your computer meets the system requirements necessary for using Author.

Hardware Requirements

  • 1 GHz processor (2 GHz recommended)
  • 1 GB available RAM (2 GB recommended)
  • 250 MB hard disk space for installation process, 85 MB thereafter
  • 1024 x 768 screen resolution

If you previously set your Windows display options to a size greater than 150% you may find that some HotDocs dialog boxes do not display properly. You can check your display settings by clicking Start Menu > Settings > System > Display.

Software Requirements

We actively test and create fixes for software that meet our software requirements:

Operating System

  • Windows 10 (32-bit and 64-bit)
  • Windows 11

Word Processor

  • Microsoft Word 2016, or 2019 (32-bit and 64-bit)
  • Microsoft Word 2021
  • Microsoft Word 2024

Prerequisites

If your computer does not already have the following software installed, during Author installation you will be prompted to authorize and download:

  • Microsoft .NET Framework 4.8
  • Microsoft SQL Server Express LocalDB:
    • Microsoft SQL Server 2019 Express
  • Visual Studio 2010 Tools for Office Runtime
  • Microsoft WebView2

If you have already installed WebView2 on your computer, the Author installer may prompt you to install WebView2 again. This is an expected behavior of the installer. Please continue with the installation.

If you do not have internet access or are otherwise prevented from downloading the software necessary for Author to run properly, you will need to install the software manually (using an external drive, local network, etc.).

Interview Support

The following browsers are supported for interviews generated from templates created in HotDocs Author:

  • Current and previous major release for:
    • Chrome
    • Edge
    • Firefox
    • Safari

Accessibility

We do the following to ensure interviews generated from HotDocs templates are accessible:

  • We make an effort to follow general public standards designed to make web applications accessible and compatible with assistive technology
  • Avoid relying solely on colors in the user interface to represent behavior
  • Accept bug reports and prioritize fixes for any issues that interfere with a user's ability to interact with the interview using assistive technology
